Sheesh, Sony must really be feeling like a porn star in sunday service with how nervous and panicky they've been since launching the Playstation 3 last year.
I've said many times on the page I hate the PS3 with a passion, but my biggest concern has always been the price they expect people to pay. To me, it really seems like who ever runs the company is severely out of touch with the core demographic of gaming. It's high schoolers and college students, and that chunk of society is fucking broke.
I'm part of that group. My sister is part of that group. My friends are part of it as well. We have other things to worry about like gas money, paying rent, college loans, text books, cell phone bills, and food. The last thing we need is some behemoth black console with a ridiculous price tag on it. Fuck you, Sony.
Sony was stubborn and still released a $600 console and not surprisingly at all, sales were instantly crap. They cut the price a few months ago in what everyone was dubbing a "fire sale" and now they have cut the price yet AGAIN. The 80 GB will now run you $500 while the new 40 GB will set you back $399.
The 60 GB model is discontinued.
Okay, so most people don't need a 80 GB hard drive on a damn console (that's the size of my current HDD on my computer, which is oddly enough a Sony Vaio, and I still have room left after 5 years), so I'm assuming most folks will go for the still expensive, yet much more affordable 40 GB model. I was intruiged by this option, really, my PS3 hatin' ass comtemplated a purchase if you can fathom that. It's around the same price point of the 360 -- a system I don't own yet but plan on buying within a few months, so I was starting to re-evaluate my stance on the third Playstation.
PS3's only good exclusive, Heavenly Sword. Congrats... *rolls eyes*
That was until I heard that it DOES NOT have PS2 backwards compatibility. Are you serious?! Sony's always taking some lame ass short cut like saying vibration wasn't possible on the wireless, Wii rip off motion sensitive SixAxis controller then saying they can do it a year later. So now all you guys who bought an extra controller or two for $50 a pop will have to vomit up another $50, $60, or whatever the hell they overprice the shit when they release a new version (the Dual Shock 3) with rumble. Sony, eat dick.
PS2 compatibility is a BIG DEAL. The fact they removed it all together is very insulting and I find it even more offensive that in a recent interview the Sony rep said the following:
"The 40 gigabyte from a backwards compatibility perspective -- it'll play PS One games but we've basically removed the PS2 backwards compatibility. As I said earlier, we're looking to cost reduce the unit so everything's on the table. The research that we have, consumers like backwards compatibility. It's nice to have, but also we know it's not their primary purchase consideration; and price is a more important consideration than PS2 backwards compatibility. So, I think our position on our commitment to the PS2 gamers is such that we've been supporting the PS2 consumer and will continue to support the PS2 as a platform for ten full years. We're in the eighth year. There's 160 games coming out for PS2. So, if you're into PS2 games, we're right there with you, and there's a $129 unit that'll play them very, very well called the PS2." -- Source: IGN PS3
What a load of shit! HOW THE STRAWBERRY FUCK can you have PS One compatability but no PS2? Honestly, does that make a single shred of sense?! The Sony rep goes on to basically say "people already have PS2s so we don't need that feature". While that's true, you've got to realize I don't want to have a bajillion fucking consoles hooked up to my TV all the time. Backwards compatability is a standard feature these days and for this model of the PS3 not to have it is the biggest load of crap I've read from Sony in awhile.
What's next? They take out the Blu Ray player? Atleast that shortcut would bring the damn price down. And honestly, who the fuck watches HD movies? 3 people? This is why the 360 and the Wii are sitll on standard DVDs. Nobody gives a damn about HD crap yet. It's on the rise, true, but it's still a luxury item.
Bottomline, Sony better get their shit straight. I didn't mean to cuss so much, but do I really have any other option with the amount of douchebaggery going on here?
