What's Killing Hip Hop?

A Tainted Artform

What's Killing Hip Hop?So let me start this off by saying…Wow.

Wow for how ignorant people are today. Let me also say I hate mainstream “hip hop“, and mainstream “dancers”. People have no idea what Hip Hop is nowadays. I guarantee you, if I went out on the streets or if I went out to any 'hood and asked 20 people what the 4 elements of Hip Hop are, they would all answer with some crap like: "uh…bling bling, hoes, killin suckaz, and 24 inch rims.." It's pretty sad and amazingly stupid…

These people that are out there on MTV or BET, are making millions and millions of dollars. My question is how in the world are they making this much money by being fake??? Seriously…Three Six Mafia?? Dem Franchize Boyz?? Lil' Jon?? 50 Cent?? Those are just to name a few… Do people actually listen to the lyrics? Do they take the time to think about what they're saying?? Do they not see how elementary their rhymes are??? They will say ANYTHING to make their verses rhyme. But anyways, these people are claiming that they're representing Hip Hop, but they're not representing it right. It's pretty amazing how American viewers and listeners are so easily fooled today.

They're not Hip Hop because they drive fancy cars. They're not Hip Hop because they wear flashy jewelry. They're not Hip Hop because they go to strip clubs and “pimp hoes”. They‘re not Hip Hop because they spent a night in jail… Seriously, what happened?? What happened to the true meaning of Hip Hop? What happened to the passion? What happened to the knowledge? What happened to self expression??

The confusion on dance styles

Another thing that pisses me off is when somebody comes up to me and tells me that they're a dancer, and they love to dance. I'll usually ask them "What type of dance do you do??" And it really really bugs me when they reply with “hip hop, I do hip hop dance” like dude…W T F??? Ok, let me clear this up. “Hip Hop” is NOT a dance style.

Step Up 2 The StreetsHip Hop is made up of 4 elements, which are DJing, rapping, graffiti tagging, and break dancing. So if you Break, then you're doing hip hop. Oh, and Popping is not the same as Breaking. Popping and Locking are two completely different styles, so how about we stop saying “poplock” or “pop and lock”? How in the world are you going to come up to me and tell me “I do hip hop dancing”… I'm sitting there like "you don't break, you stupid queer and a half…"!

Everyone seems to think people like Usher, Omarion, Ciara, and Chris Brown are hip hop dancers, and they think these people are soooo amazing… Please -- get that out of here. They're wack; it's all choreography. Street style dancing, whether its breaking or popping, should come from your heart and soul -- from your head; freestyle. Dancing or making music should not be "about the girls"…as Chris Brown claims… This, people, is what we call a complete disgrace.

You wanna see real hip hop dancers, the best dancers in the world?? Check out Drifterz Crew, Extreme Crew, Rivers Crew, Hong10, Physicx, Born, Eagle, Salah, Poppin Hyun Joon. Watch them, and try to tell me Omarion and Chris Brown are still tight… This is why I don't do movies like You Got Served or Step Up

So, is Hip Hop dead?? I wouldn't say it completely died out, but if it keeps going on like this, the real meaning of hip hop will be history…

I only listen to Lil' Jon and other super mainstream music to study the beats... and 60% of what I hear I could do myself if I had a better program or just better samples in FL Studio.

Rap is getting kind of whack these days though. I did a gripe file about how watered down and "corporate" rap's gotten way back in 2003. I forgot what gripe number it was, but it's not in the archive right now.

Good article. I'm retarded when it comes to break dancing and all the diff. types of dance styles out there, so any education on it is a-okay by me.

You should write more stuff lol.

Good article. On a side note, I still find myself cringing these days when I hear white people say things like "bling bling" and talk like they're from the ghetto. I'm suddenly reminded of that skit on Chappelle Show on that trading places skit where Leonard Washington drove his replacement son to a bad part of the city and dumped him off because he walked in him being a poser. That's about it there. One more thing, I would enjoy rap more if it wasn't about angry rich people, marionette-like women, and people getting killed.

It is sad what has happened to the state of hip-hop music these days. I guess that's why I don't even listen to it anymore, I just know enough so I won't look retared during a conversation lol.
